Dr. G. Prefers Prose to Pros

While Dr. Giannini penned this feel good article about the importance of assistant coaches, Martelli and Wright were out pounding the pavement inking recruits. Can you name the last great PhD coach? You can stop thinking after you get to Dr. Naismith and Dr. Jack Ramsey.

Dude, if the comment about Martelli and Wright being out working while Dr. G. is screwing around writing articles was a lame attempt at humor, fair enough. But if you really think that there is a coach in the Big 5 (or anywhere else for that matter) who outworks Dr. G. and his staff, you are sadly mistaken.

Gazelle deserves a little bit of heat here. Bit of a cheap shot, we admit.

GAZELLE PREFERS POSTS TO PROTEIN

While Gazelle penned that post about the importance of inking recruits, good hearted people were out trying to solve the food shortage in Haiti. Can you name the last good writer who was a wild animal? You can stop after Oscar Wilde Animal.

On the other side of the coin, outworking people doesn't do much for me anymore. I applaud effort in the Special Olympics. College basketball is results based.

Ok, fair point about effort. But if you are questioning the results than you haven't been paying attention. When Dr. G arrived on the scene, I don't think anyone realized how deep a hole Speedy and Billy Hahn and his handling of "the events" of that fatefull summer had left the program. He basically had no recruiting time in his first year. The "results" as you term them was one of the best recruiting classes (this year's sophmore class) that La Salle has seen since the Michael Brooks class (Class of '80). Last year's class with the Williams twiins and Kyle Griffin was pretty good as well. With a team made up of freshmen and sophs getting the overwhelming amount of playing time the team last year had a pretty good season, albeit after early struggles. So your smacked-ass comment about "applauding effort in the Special Olympics" completely missed my point as a counter-point to your cheap-shot post. Dr. G's "hard work" and "effort" should be applauded because he has gotten the "result" of getting La Salle back on the shopping list of A-10 level players (and actually closing teh deal on some of them) after his predecessors had royally screwed up the program.

I must say, we at the Den appreciate your brand of optimism. We need that. All fair points about the impact of Dr. G so far. I tip my cap that he actually brought this program a winning record. But how low has this program sunk we should get excited about winning more games then we lost?

At the end of the work day, I want to watch an NCAA tournament ready squad. If I can't do that, and I haven't for more than a decade, I'll choose to have a good laugh. If your his son or one of his assistants he glowed about in the article, yeah maybe it's a cheap shot. But I don't care what you say, a PhD with a quill is damn funny. I think that could be his signature - like Tark and his towel. He asks all of his recruits to ink their letter of intent with his quill pen.
